A bowl left full or a dog that delays its treats? It is a signal not to be overlooked. With age, taste, smell and digestion change. Prefer a more appetizing, digestible and easy-to-chew diet. On the rest side, do not worry if your dog sleeps almost all day: this is his way of recharging his strength. Arrange a soft corner, away from the noise, where he can rest serenely.
Small physical problems to watch for
Incontinence, difficulty getting up or climbing stairs… it’s all part of the natural process of aging. These discomforts can be relieved by simple care: an easily accessible litter, a non-slip carpet or more frequent walks. If the symptoms increase, a veterinary control will allow to adapt his comfort to the daily.
Also pay attention to his breathing: unusual gasps, a cough or a breath always runs a professional opinion.
A changing coat, gums to observer
The body of an elderly dog speaks through his skin and gums. A hair that tarnishes, a stronger breath, a lighter gum color… are all clues that its body slows down. This is not always worrying, but it often indicates that more regular follow-up is needed. Brush it gently, talk to him calmly: these simple gestures are as therapeutic as a drug.
