For residents and visitors in this region, this means that the weather can quickly turn from quiet to turbulent.
Hail, rain and wind: what to expect
The announced showers are accompanied by various weather phenomena. For example, there is a chance of hailstones with a size up to about two centimeters. While this will not occur everywhere, it can cause surprising situations locally.
In addition, a lot of rain is expected in a short time. In some areas, this can reach up to 10 to 20 millimeters. When this amount of precipitation falls quickly, it can lead to temporary flooding, for example on roads or in lower areas.
The wind also plays a role. During the showers, wind gusts can occur at speeds of up to about 70 kilometers per hour. This can affect traffic, outdoor activities and loose objects in the area.
Storms make it complete
In addition to rain, hail and wind, there is also a chance of thunderstorms. This means that lightning and thunder can occur, which makes the showers extra intense.
Thunderstorms can differ locally in strength and duration. In some areas, it is limited to short moments, while elsewhere it persists for longer. This makes it difficult to predict exactly where and when it will be the most intense.
It is therefore wise to stay alert and follow up-to-date weather information.
Code yellow in multiple provinces
Due to the expected conditions, the KNMI has issued code yellow for large parts of the Netherlands. This warning means that potentially dangerous weather situations may arise that people need to take into account.
The warning does not take effect for the entire country at once, but gradually spreads. This is because the showers move from south to north.
Timetable of the warnings
The first warning applies to Limburg, where code yellow starts around 16.00. There, the period with increased risk of impetuous weather lasts until about 21:00.
