Most readers immediately assume that the numbers refer to calendar years. Since no one can live 22 years while being born and dying in the same year, the statement appears impossible.
However, the trick is that the number “1975” does not necessarily represent a year.
Instead, it could refer to something entirely different, such as:
- A hospital room number
- A house number
- An address
- A building number
- Another identifying label
Once you stop assuming the number is a year, the puzzle suddenly makes perfect sense.
