While searching the legendary family furniture, I imagined myself discovering ordinary relics. Instead, I got my hands on strange plastic artifacts, the function of which has long remained obscure to me. Their true use, linked to a forgotten aesthetic practice, was finally revealed to me.
A drawer that concealed much more than we imagined
At first glance, I had cataloged them as old obsolete knickknacks, vestiges without great value. After making the rounds of my loved ones without success, it was by showing them to my mother that the mystery dissipated.
His face lit up with a smile heard, almost nostalgic. For her, these objects embodied a ritual of fundamental beauty, almost sacred, for the women of her time.
Discovery : vintage bigoudis
These twisted and colorful forms have proven to be old curlers, the indispensable allies of our grandmothers’ hairstyles. At a time when elegance was played on structured hair and full of volume, these accessories were the key.
Long before the era of straighteners and electric loopers, they proposed the ideal method to sculpt loops, waves or curves, all from the comfort of his own home.
The beginnings of a hair transformation
The initial versions, which appeared in the early 1900’s, were rather rudimentary: metal or rigid plastic rolls. Although not pleasant to wear, their effectiveness was undeniable. Women frequently kept them for hours, sometimes overnight, to get up with a perfect folding.
In the 50’s and 60’s, their use was truly widespread. The brands then diversified the diameters, designs and materials to meet all the hair natures and all hairdressing desires.
