Steam rose from the water, the surrounding landscape was breathtaking, and the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park is one of the places visitors come to experience the remarkable power of nature.

But in June 2016, a seemingly small decision near one of the basin’s thermal features ended in tragedy.

Colin Nathaniel Scott, 23, was visiting Yellowstone with his sister when he left the designated boardwalk near Porkchop Geyser. According to the park’s incident records and contemporary reports, Scott approached a small thermal pool and slipped and fell into it.

What happened afterward became one of the most disturbing reminders of why Yellowstone’s warning signs must never be ignored.

🌋 Yellowstone’s Beautiful Waters Can Be Extremely Dangerous

Yellowstone is famous for its geysers, colorful hot springs, and bubbling pools. But these features aren’t ordinary bodies of water.

Norris Geyser Basin is considered one of the hottest and most acidic thermal areas in the park. The National Park Service notes that many of its thermal features are at or above the boiling point for that elevation, which is about 199°F (93°C). Many of the waters are also acidic.

That combination makes approaching the water incredibly dangerous.

The ground surrounding thermal features can also be unstable. A surface that appears solid may not be capable of safely supporting a person’s weight.

That’s why visitors are instructed to remain on designated trails and boardwalks.

The Decision to Get Closer

Scott and his sister had traveled hundreds of feet away from the boardwalk in the Norris area.

Contemporary reports said that Scott was attempting to check the temperature of the water when he slipped. His sister immediately sought help. Rangers responded and later confirmed that Scott had died.

The incident occurred in an area where visitors are specifically warned to stay on established routes.

It’s an important distinction: the danger wasn’t obvious in the way a cliff edge might be. The thermal landscape can look surprisingly calm.

A pool can appear almost inviting while hiding temperatures capable of causing catastrophic injuries.

🚨 The Rescue Attempt Was Also Dangerous

Once rangers arrived, they faced another problem.

The thermal area itself was too hazardous for an immediate recovery operation. According to the incident record, responders were able to see Scott in the pool that evening, but worsening weather—including lightning—prevented them from safely continuing the recovery effort.

This illustrates something visitors sometimes forget about wilderness rescue.

Rangers are highly trained professionals, but they cannot simply enter an unstable geothermal area without considering the danger to rescuers themselves.

A rescue attempt that creates additional victims helps no one.

The Next Morning

When the recovery team returned the following morning, they were unable to locate Scott’s remains.

The official incident record states that his wallet and flip-flops were recovered. It also records that the water temperature was at least 212°F (100°C) when measured the next day. The report noted that the extreme heat and acidic conditions likely caused the remains to dissolve.

That detail is difficult to comprehend.

A place that looked like a quiet pool had become an environment so extreme that even recovery operations were extraordinarily difficult.
