Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis remains a field where science is facing many unknowns. Experts agree that the disease results from a complex combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Like a sudden weather event, it can affect both people without a family history of the disease and people with hereditary forms.
The relentless process of BAS
This serious neurological disease attacks motor neurons, the vital cells that transmit impulses from the brain to the muscles. When these “biological messengers” die, the muscles, deprived of instructions, gradually lose tone and atrophy. Movement, speech, swallowing and, in the advanced stages, even breathing are gradually impaired.
Warning signs: symptoms not to be ignored
The first symptoms are often almost invisible, such as a gradual loss of strength. Atypical muscle fatigue manifests itself with increasing difficulty in daily activities: walking, climbing stairs, holding objects firmly. What used to be automatic suddenly requires intense concentration.
