U.S. researchers use light to attack cancer cells.
Can the tumor be destroyed without chemotherapy? A new procedure raises hope.
Researchers from three leading American universities have announced a new cancer treatment method that could break with traditional, often distressing therapies.
In laboratory tests, a special, targeted, light-based procedure was able to kill 99 percent of the aggressive cancer cells without the use of chemotherapy, radiation or toxic drugs.
The new method targets the tumor cells exclusively and leaves the surrounding healthy tissue untouched. This represents a significant departure from previous treatment methods, which often affect the entire body.
How does the treatment work?
The technology is based on a special molecule injected into the body and is usually completely inactive. This substance only becomes active when it is exposed to light of a certain wavelength.
