For several days now, a new outbreak of hantavirus, specifically the Andes virus, has been drawing the attention of international health authorities. Several cases have been detected aboard a cruise ship, generating concern among many people worldwide.
Hantaviruses are viruses transmitted primarily by rodents. In humans, they can cause serious infections affecting the lungs or kidneys. The Andes virus, found in South America, is unique because, in some cases, it can be transmitted from person to person.
Why is this virus being talked about today?
In May 2026, several cruise ship passengers were infected. Three deaths were reported, which quickly generated significant media coverage. However, the World Health Organization indicated that the risk of a global pandemic remained low at that time.
