I found this in a flooded ditch. I caught it and brought it home in a jar. I have no idea what it could be. Does anyone know? Check the first comment for the answer 👇

I saw it writhing in the muddy ditch and froze.

Long, segmented, with eerie tail threads flicking in the water,

it looked like something that crawled straight out of a nightmare.

For a moment I was sure it was a parasite, or worse — some unknown invader.

It wasn’t a parasite at all, but a Triops — a tiny crustacean often called a “living fossil.”

Their lineage stretches back hundreds of millions of years, long before dinosaurs thundered across the planet.

The creature I found in that shallow ditch was

the descendant of ancient life that has somehow survived mass extinctions, climate shifts, and the complete reshaping of Earth.
